More than just a certificate: an investment in who you're becoming!

Our training is built on a simple belief: becoming a yoga teacher is a profound act of personal development, and teaching others well is a craft in its own right. At Oru, you'll grow as a person and as a practitioner, and you'll also learn the specific, teachable skills of holding space, reading a room, sequencing with intention, and finding your own authentic voice as a teacher.

Our ethos: no dogma, just depth

There is no one way with yoga. We strip out the dogma and instead ask you to bring your critical thinking and your curiosity. You'll ask questions. You'll experience things for yourself, on your mat, in your body, before you're ever asked to teach them to someone else. That's what it means to teach from an embodied place, something we value highly at Oru.

We believe the practice should be accessible, to different bodies, different backgrounds, different reasons for showing up. And we believe teachers carry a responsibility to understand where this practice comes from. So we go deep into yoga's roots, and we don't shy away from the harder conversations: what's the line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation? How do we honour a lineage while teaching in a modern context? You'll leave with a grounded understanding of the philosophy and texts that shape yoga today, not as abstract theory, but as living context for how and why you teach.

And when it comes to anatomy and asana, we deliberately leave aesthetics and performance at the door. We won't be optimising for how a pose looks. We'll explore the body through a different lens entirely: one of wonderment, functionality, strength, empowerment, and appreciation for how our bodies move and express themselves.

What makes Oru’s training different?

💫 Small by design: We keep our groups intentionally small, so learning is specialised and intimate rather than generic. You'll be seen, questioned, supported, and pushed, not lost in a crowd.

💫 Hybrid: So you get the best of both. The course blends 11 intensive training days at our beautiful retreat centre in southern Spain Oru El Saltador, with London weekends onsite at both Oru Dulwich and Oru Sutton, giving you the immersive depth of a residential-style intensive alongside the rhythm and flexibility of weekend study you can build your life around.

💫 Spaces designed for learning: Where you learn shapes how you learn. Our lectures take place in our Sutton town hall and our Dulwich workspace, rooms designed for engagement and focus. Teaching practice happens in our wellness studios, perfect for practising and refining your craft.

What you'll study ✍

Philosophy: the ideas and texts that give yoga its foundation

Anatomy: the body through the lens of function, strength and wonder, not aesthetics

Sanskrit and yoga's roots: honouring where this practice comes from

The art of teaching: finding your authentic voice as a teacher

Sequencing and theming: building classes with intention and intelligence

Holding space: the skill of creating an environment where people can show up as they are

Who this is for

This training is for yoga practitioners who want to deepen their understanding and experience of yoga. Whether you’re considering teaching yoga or you simply want to immerse yourself more deeply in the practice and explore its philosophy, history, traditions and wider practices in greater depth, this course is for you. What matters most is that you’re already practicing yoga and have a genuine curiosity to explore it beyond the physical practice.

This course is for those who are willing to start from the beginning, commit to a period of structure and discipline, face themselves openly and be vulnerable. You’ll be encouraged to question what you think you know, be willing to be challenged and at times, step outside of your comfort zone. Come ready to practice, question, reflect and explore. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of yoga for yourself, whilst gaining the knowledge and skills to share the practice with others if and when you choose to.

Course Outcomes

This course is first and foremost an exploration and study of yoga. Alongside developing the knowledge and skills to teach, you’ll be encouraged to experience the practices for yourself, question what you’re learning and develop your own relationship with yoga.

The intention is not simply to teach you how to lead a yoga class, but to give you a strong foundation in the wider practices, philosophy and traditions of yoga, so that you can eventually share them with others from a place of understanding and lived experience.

✓ Develop a comprehensive understanding of yoga

Explore the history, origins and evolution of yoga, as well as its different traditions, paths and practices. You’ll develop an understanding of yoga beyond asana, including philosophy, meditation, pranayama and the other practices that make up the wider tradition.

✓ Develop a deeper understanding of yourself through yoga

Through integral practices of self inquiry, you’ll spend time exploring your mind, patterns, behaviours and relationship with yourself. You’ll cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, introspection and reflection, whilst beginning to integrate the teachings into your own life. The intention is to experience and embody the practice for yourself first, before going out and sharing it with others.

✓ Understand and experience the body

Develop an understanding of anatomy and physiology through both intellectual study and embodied learning. You’ll explore how the body moves, functions and responds to yoga practices and learn how to apply this knowledge in a practical and meaningful way.

✓ Embody the practice of yoga

Through multiple hours of asana, pranayama and meditation practice, you’ll develop a deeper experiential understanding of yoga. Rather than simply learning how to explain a practice, you’ll have the opportunity to experience it repeatedly for yourself, building the foundations to teach from a place of embodied understanding.

✓ Develop a broad and critical perspective

Learn from a variety of teachers, voices and perspectives. Exposure to different approaches and interpretations will encourage you to question, investigate and think critically about what you’re taught, rather than simply accepting one way of understanding yoga.

✓ Learn to confidently teach group classes

Develop the practical skills needed to teach group yoga classes and hold space for the people in front of you. You’ll learn how to structure and sequence classes, communicate clearly and create an environment that feels safe, supportive and inclusive.

✓ Learn to adapt your teaching to your students

Develop the skills to respond to the individual people in front of you. Learn how to offer appropriate modifications and variations, develop clear and effective verbal cues and make your classes accessible to different bodies, abilities and levels of experience.

✓ Weave philosophy into practice

Explore how yoga philosophy can become a meaningful part of your teaching rather than something that sits separately from asana. Learn how to intelligently theme classes and weave philosophical ideas into your teaching in ways that are relevant, accessible and connected to practice.

✓ Integrate pranayama and meditation

Develop an understanding of pranayama and meditation and learn how to offer these practices safely and appropriately. Explore how breath and meditation can support internal awareness, concentration, regulation and a deeper experience of yoga.

✓ Develop your own voice as a teacher

Rather than learning one prescribed way of teaching, you’ll be encouraged to explore what kind of teacher you want to become. Through practice teaching, feedback, observation and reflection, you’ll begin to develop your own voice, teaching style and approach.

✓ Build the foundations for a career in yoga

Learn about the practical realities of teaching yoga, including how to approach studios, find teaching opportunities, market yourself and navigate the London yoga teaching landscape. You’ll leave with practical tools to begin building your own teaching career.

✓ Create meaningful community

Build relationships with your fellow students, teachers and the wider Oru community. The training is an opportunity to learn alongside others, share experiences and become part of a supportive yoga community.

✓ Certification

Upon successful completion of all modules, assessments and attendance requirements, you’ll receive a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificate, accredited by Yoga Alliance.

Lead Teacher

Sammy Rainbow Furnival

Sammy Rainbow Furnival is a yoga teacher, teacher trainer, mentor and founder of an international yoga retreat business, with over 12 years’ experience teaching and more than 1,500 hours of formal yoga teacher training. She has undertaken trainings with teachers including Jim Tarran, Bernie Clark, Sarah Powers, Ana Forrest and Michael James Wong, exploring a broad range of approaches to asana, yoga philosophy, mindfulness and the wider practices of yoga. Sammy has also taught on various 200 and 300 hour yoga teacher trainings both in the UK and abroad.

Having experienced the transformative potential of yoga and self inquiry first hand, at the heart of Sammy’s teaching is a belief that yoga is about far more than the physical postures. Her approach places equal value on philosophy, breath, sensory awareness, mindfulness and self inquiry, encouraging students to develop a deeper understanding of both the practice and themselves. Her teaching is characterised by intelligent sequencing, clear and thoughtful instruction, strong philosophical foundations and a healthy appreciation for not taking ourselves too seriously. She aims to create spaces where students feel encouraged to explore and experience rather than strive for perfection.

One thing Sammy is particularly passionate about is teaching in a way that honours yoga’s roots and origins, while also making the teachings accessible, relevant and meaningful within a modern context. She believes that understanding where these practices come from, their original purposes and the traditions that have shaped them is an important part of becoming a responsible and well rounded yoga teacher.

As a teacher trainer and mentor, Sammy is passionate about helping others develop the knowledge, confidence and awareness to share these practices with integrity. She particularly enjoys helping students move beyond simply learning how to teach poses, towards developing the skills to understand, observe and respond to the people in front of them. Her teaching mantra is simple: ‘We’re here to teach people, not poses.’
