May at Oru Space
Closing The Loop
From compost to community, how do we cultivate a more circular ecosystem?
Hello from Vibushan.
This month’s theme is all about closing the loop, thinking about how we can collectively step closer towards a more sustainable and circular way of life.
We are living in a world that has become disconnected from the cycle of creation, with nearly everything available in an instant, the appreciation for the journey of growth has been forgotten. At Oru, we want to try and slow things down, putting more care and thought into how we do things as a way of protesting against the fast-paced world we now live in.
We put a lot of care and attention into our food at Trinco, our menu is fully vegetarian, though you wouldn’t realise it straightaway. The food at Trinco is a great example of the many ways you can experiment with food as a vegetarian. While vegetarianism and veganism can seem quite daunting for some, we have made it our mission at Trinco to showcase how easy it can be to enjoy delicious and nourishing food without having meat. If we truly want to move forward towards a sustainable future, then we all need to consider the possibility of cutting out meat where we can. I know it seems scary, but come on down to Trinco, and we’ll show you how it’s done!
One of our exciting new additions to the menu at Trinco is the Black Hopper. This is an exciting and innovative take on a rice hopper, which we make using fermented black rice and coconut milk. They taste DELICIOUS. Hoppers are a great source of energy, and they are naturally gluten-free. As well as this, because they are made from fermented rice, they aid digestive health. Another exciting update in Trinco is PIZZA. The Trinco Rooftop bar in Sutton is re-opening with a bang - we are going to be serving homemade, organic pizza with Sri Lankan-inspired toppings. Trust me when I say, they are phenomenal, and we can’t wait for you to try them. My personal favourite is the Seeni Sambol pizza with Blue Cheese! We’re topping our pizzas with fresh vegetables grown right here in our community garden — bringing our food full circle from garden to plate.
Last but not least, arguably the most exciting update this month is the arrival of our new rescued friends at Oru… Say hello to our chickens! Our Chickens are going to help us massively when it comes to embedding a closed-loop system at Oru. From laying eggs for us to use in Trinco to turning our food waste into compost for the garden, our chickens will play a vital role in supporting our mission of self-sufficiency and circular living. P.s we need help naming them, head over to our socials to drop your suggestions!
I’d love to hear your input and ideas when it comes to closing the loop and what this means for you. If you have any thoughts, please email me at vib@oruspace.co
This Month We’re Thinking in Circles…
We want to move away from the more linear economy of take, make, waste, and instead creating a closed loop where materials and resources are reused, repaired and returned to the earth.
This approach isn’t something new at Oru, we have been doing it from the very beginning. From composting, to second-hand furniture and community values, we have always embraced circularity as a mindset and a practice. Our chickens are now closing the loop in our rooftop garden in Sutton by transforming food waste into rich compost that nourishes the soil and of course, laying eggs for our kitchen!
Welcoming chickens might seem surprising, but for us, it makes perfect sense. They’re a living symbol of what we’re building here: a high street that’s alive again…more connected, more circular, and closer to nature.
An Evening On Oru El Saltador…
Oru El Saltador is an exciting new regenerative retreat space we’re creating in Andalusia, Spain. It is set on 81 acres of land and with space to sleep up to 30 guests. Oru El Saltador will allow us to develop a truly circular, self-sustaining model on a far greater scale than ever before. It will allow us to explore how community, sustainability, and innovation can come together to create an ecosystem that not only supports itself but also regenerates the environment and enriches the people within it. We look forward to taking you with us as Oru enters its next chapter.
Join us for ‘An Evening On El Saltador’ to hear from Vib and the team as we share the story, the vision, and the financials behind the project. Join us from 17:00-19:00 on the 24th of May for Sutton or the 31st of May for Dulwich!
Rethinking Connection: It’s Not Just You
Community and Connection is all about circularity, extending yourselves to others whilst also holding space for yourself. For Mental Health Awareness Week, we wanted to have an important discussion. Loneliness and isolation are growing across society, and it’s not just within the older communities. This is affecting us all! Why does it feel harder than ever to reach out when you’re struggling? And how can we change that?
We often think of loneliness as an individual problem, something to be solved with better self-care, stronger boundaries, or simply ‘reaching out.’ But the reality is more complex and more collective. Loneliness isn’t a flaw in the individual, rather, it’s a reflection of the systems that aren’t working.
From third spaces closing to unaffordable socialising, from hyper-curated online lives to the pressure to always seem ‘good’, we are seeing a generation priced out of connection and left to feel like it’s their fault. Join us on the 17th May to deep-dive into this topic further with experts from across the mental health and wellness space.
We have some other amazing events for you this month, from restorative workshops to the grand opening of our rooftop in Sutton. Keep your eyes peeled for the return of our Rooftop Summer Sessions, our weekly Saturday session where we will have a live DJ, what better way to spend your Saturday evening?
A Circle of Practice, Moving with the Seasons and Rhythms of the Earth
In the spirit of circularity, we think it’s really important to embrace the seasonal shifts and move with the rhythms of the Earth.
The weather is warmer, and we’re excited for summer. To honour the return of lighter and warmer evenings, Rooftop Yoga is back and better than ever, as we have new classes to try on our beautiful rooftops at both Dulwich at Sutton. We are bringing Barre and Pilates to the roof as well as our Vinyasa Flow classes! Rooftop yoga offers an opportunity to reconnect with the elements, adding a layer of grounding and connectedness to your practise.
Discover your next favourite class…
We are constantly expanding and refreshing our wellness offerings, and we have so many new and exciting classes joining our wellness schedule this month! From Breathwork + Sound Healing, to Somatic Movement and Flow, there is something for everyone, whether you are seeking to restore the balance in your week or challenge yourself to a class you haven’t tried before!
Elemental Yoga Retreat in Portugal
We have a few last spots left for our beautiful elemental yoga retreat in Portugal next month! Join Christie and the Oru team for a sunshine-filled 5-night 6-day yoga retreat from June 16th - 21st. The retreat will take place in the beautiful Serra de Estrela mountains, a natural healing sanctuary nestled in the stunning foothills and without a car or house in sight.
As our community rooftop garden begins to really thrive and produce amazing fruit and vegetables for us, the desire to create a more circular system is being realised. Greta, our community gardener, works very closely with the kitchen and provides them with fresh produce from the garden whenever it is ready to harvest. Last week, we harvested some massive chards from the garden and enjoyed it the day after for our Lunch Special at Trinco! This Saturday, you can enjoy your pizza topped with fresh spinach, picked straight from our garden!
The Trinco Rooftop Bar is Opening!
We are so excited to re-open our Trinco rooftop this month, and this year the rooftop is coming bigger and better! From the 16th May, the Trinco rooftop will be open every Friday and Saturday, serving cocktails, beers and pizzas as well as other delicious Trinco food and snacks!
To celebrate, join us on the 17th May of a Trinco Rooftop Launch party where we will be joined by Dj’s, Live Music and most importantly…PIZZA!
Community in Coworking
One of the really special things about Coworking with us at Oru is the sense of community. You aren’t just signing up for a desk when you work with us, you are signing up to the opportunity to become part of a vibrant and diverse community of members. To celebrate the growing Oru community, we've planned a day out for our members as a chance to connect, unwind, and spend quality time together. We are going to head to the Kentish seaside, walking from Broadstairs to Margate and finishing off with a bite to eat and a pint! If you are a member and would like to join us, follow the link below to sign up!
The Wellbeing Quarter
