September at oru: crowdfunding for oru el saltador is OPEN, 100% FUNDED, STRETCH TARGET ACTIVATED

Crowdfunding for Oru El Saltador is OPEN, 100% funded, stretch target activated!

Hello from Vibushan, We’re white, we’re black, we’re brown, we’re gay and we couldn’t care less. But for some reason, some people do again. Racism seems to be making a comeback.

Our "esteemed" leaders seem to have lost their backbone and are doing their best to side with populism…. or soften it… or absorb it… who knows? There’s been some weird shit going down in Sutton, and beyond. We’ve had doubters before, but this time it cut deeper. It felt personal. I put it out on LinkedIn and Instagram, and the responses were very reassuring.  I’ll be honest, I struggled for a week. But what’s clear now is that I’m not alone.

My conclusion: There are so many more of “us” than “them”; the difference is we just don’t have as much time on our hands as the massive racists/homophobes.

Anyway to business…. We are stronger than ever, we are turning over more revenue than ever, we are doing more social impact than ever and guess what, Oru El Saltador is 100% funded at the time of writing this! IT IS HAPPENING. F*ck the haters. Sorry, back to business…

The first retreat at our third site, Oru El Saltador, in January is sold out! We chose Melanie and Miriam to lead this as a ceremony as much as a launch retreat, heading up our wellness across Oru. They live and breathe our values, thank you both. The second retreat is 50% sold a week after going up! Gee, one of our very best barre teachers, taking on our first barre retreat and the response has been… AGGRESIVELY positive. The third retreat is going to be with the truly exceptional and multi-talented Uwa, who teaches a mind-blowing 5 different styles of classes for us. The fourth…. Who do you want?

Lightning Talks BEGIN! I’ll be co-hosting with Sarina, and it’s going to be a lot of fun-if you’ve got something gloriously niche to share in five minutes, get your applications in.

Over in Trinco, the restaurant is in a constant state of evolution; Paul and I can’t resist working late into the night (apologies to our neighbours), but the results are worth it. The space feels more like home, the evening menu keeps levelling up, and I promise the much-loved muttonless rolls are here to stay. Current highlight? The butternut squash pakora with chilli pickled greengages and labneh — award-worthy in our eyes.

Huge thanks to Lola for the inspiration on our redesign, and to some serendipitously found reclaimed shelves that gave us the perfect finishing touch.

Wellness had a big moment with Active August: 60 attendees celebrated, 10 practitioners donated prizes, and 10 new classes are on the horizon, including the brilliant Gabrielle Conradie joining us from Dulwich. And finally, events hit a milestone: we had our FIRST wedding at Trinco on Saturday night, and it was BEAUTIFUL. Lots of love to the happy couple, Adam & Ali.

I only manage to write these newsletters on busy evenings in Dulwich Trinco, isn’t that strange? To finish, here’s a fox in my garden, isn’t it cute? Keep it wild, everyone, add a little bowl of water.

If you want to get in contact and discuss anything I’ve mentioned in this newsletter, please email me at vib@oruspace.co

Invest in Oru’s 3rd Site

We are so excited to share that our crowdfunding campaign is now officially OPENWe’ve already raised 100% of the funds needed to bring Oru El Saltador to lifeWe are now crowdfunding for our stretch target of £1 million! From as little as £20, you can join us as a co-owner in Oru's third location. Oru El Saltador marks the next chapter in our Oru journey: an off-grid retreat centre, set on 81 acres of Andalusian land, a sanctuary for rest, regeneration, connection… and so much more!

We’ve got huge plans! We’ve already hosted 10 sold-out Oru retreats, and now, we’re buying a fully operational, off-grid retreat centre to take things to the next level. Owning this site means we can run two Oru-led retreats every month, with more than just yoga: pilates, barre, TRX, cycling, strength, and holistic wellbeing.

We’ll also hire out the space to aligned retreat leaders, host teacher trainings, and welcome Oru Members to stay and reconnect with themselves, each other and nature. More Oru magic, rooted in land, purpose and regeneration. With your support, we’ll:

  • Build an outdoor yoga shala

  • Create a natural swimming pool and an outdoor kitchen

  • x a food forest and re-wild the 81-acre site

  • Design a purpose-built workspace for deep focus, balanced with space to stay and recharge

  • Host year-round programming: retreats, trainings, leadership intensives, permaculture programming and more!

Connection between, Soil, Seed & Plate

Every Wednesday, we host a community gardening session on our rooftop garden at Oru Sutton. It’s a chance to get hands-on with gardening, learn new skills, and share knowledge while connecting with others in the community. We’ve been running these sessions for over a year now (with a little pause during the colder months), and it’s been so rewarding to watch both the garden and the sense of community flourish side by side. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has joined us and contributed their time, energy, and care to our gardening volunteer sessions. You’ve helped make this space what it is today!

Events rooted in Connection and Community

It was a busy August for us here at Oru. From Cosmic Connections to Inspired Conversations to a beautiful day filled with celebration in honour of South Asian Heritage Month at Oru Sutton.

We began the month with Cosmic Connections, hosted by relationship therapist Sabah Khan. The night aimed to explore dating more intentionally, creating a space for people to meet others also seeking meaningful connections, away from the apps. The night was a great success, and we are excited to announce that our next Cosmic Connections will be on the 26th of September!
Next, we marked South Asian Heritage Month at Oru Sutton with a day of celebration. The morning opened with a yoga class accompanied by live Tamil instrumentals, creating a beautiful bridge between practice and lineage. Later, LOOSU WORLD led a panel discussion on this year’s theme, From Roots to Routes, which flowed into an inspiring live musical performance by Drumshed Collective and an incredible closing DJ set from Gowshi.

We have an amazing month of events and workshops ahead, and we’re especially excited to be launching Lightning Talks with Oru, hosted by our CEO, Vibushan Thirukumar. This fast-paced series of mini-presentations is designed to spark ideas, share perspectives, and inspire conversation.

We’ll have eight speakers, each taking just 3–5 minutes to share their story, idea, or viewpoint – from Ed Beesley on The Myths of Alignment and Marco Zaccaria on Digital Dharma, to Sarina Saadat exploring Psychedelics & Psychotherapy and Catherine Draper on Climate Change and Systems Change. With one spot still open to talk, head to the link below to apply. The Nich-er the topic the better! There will also be the chance for a spontaneous freestyle talk from the audience. Lightning Talks are all about celebrating diverse, niche voices and making knowledge accessible in fun and unexpected ways.

Tickets will also be available at the door. Come ready to listen, connect, and maybe even step up to speak!

What a Summer!

What a summer it’s been at Trinco! Both Sutton and Dulwich have been buzzing these past few months, and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. In Sutton, this summer has been a big one. We launched Trinco Evenings, serving Sri Lankan-inspired pizzas alongside delicious cocktails + so much more, the menu has gone down a treat. Our rooftop has been the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights, with magical sunsets, live DJs (on Saturdays), and the best vibes for our Trinco Summer Sessions. And the good news? Summer isn’t over just yet. Join us every Friday and Saturday from 15:00 if you haven’t already—and keep your eyes peeled for what’s coming to Trinco Sutton this Autumn. You asked, we listened…

In Dulwich, Trinco has been absolutely buzzing. From busy daytimes to ambient evenings, the vibe this summer has been incredible! Last week, we teamed up with Modal Wines for an evening with wine tasting and small plates; it was a huge success. Guests enjoyed dishes like beetroot ‘tartare’ and chilli-pickled greengage on toast, a real favourite of the evening, paired with an exciting line-up of wines including skin contact whites and a chilled red. There’s plenty more to come this autumn at Trinco Dulwich, so watch this space!

This month, we welcomed 20 new members into our community! We love to see our community grow every single month! At Oru, co-working is about so much more than just sharing a desk. It’s about being part of a vibrant, welcoming community that grows here every day. It’s the free meditation classes on Wednesdays and Fridays, giving you the chance to reset after a busy morning. It’s the conversations sparked over Toastie Tuesdays and Members’ Drinks. There are countless opportunities to build meaningful connections with others, and it’s something we feel truly privileged to nurture.

The Wellbeing Quarter

We’re proud to have such a vibrant network of practitioners across both our Oru sites in the Wellbeing Quarter. Our members offer an incredible range of treatments from Reiki, Shiatsu and Osteopathy to Massage, Facials, Manicures, Nail Art and more. Whether you’re looking for relief from pain with an alternative therapy, a fresh set of nails, or simply a restorative massage, our talented practitioners are here for you. Visit our website to explore the full range. And if you’re a practitioner or therapist seeking a welcoming space to treat clients, follow the link below to learn more about renting a treatment room and joining the Oru community.
