Bounceback Feature - Miriam Fine Coaching

Recently we sat down with Miriam Fine, a recipient of our Bounceback membership to hear a little about her experience and time at Oru. Our Bounceback membership scheme provides free coworking membership for three months, supporting individuals looking for work, launching a new business or starting freelance life.

Hello Miriam! Thank you for sitting down with us today for a chat.

Would you like to start by telling us a bit about what you do?

I’m a coach, specialising in burnout prevention for healthcare professionals. I’m passionate about working with people who are in systems they’re frustrated and disempowered by, and may be experiencing a loss of passion or self-identity - using coaching to help them get back in touch with their agency and spark!

I practice presence and client-centred coaching - I find that giving people space to get everything out of their heads and working with them to set outcomes rather than having a planned agenda can be the most transformative! Often, having space to decompress and reflect is missing in our professional lives and we are led to feel like we need to ‘fix’ ourselves so we can continue working intensely. I help people find emotional boundaries so they’re not taking on the stress and responsibility of others or being ‘rescuers’.

What’s your journey been like?

I first trained as a doctor, and was applying for my GP training as a junior doctor when I found myself questioning, do I really want to do this? It was the first time in 10 years that I hadn’t just kept going without tuning in to myself, and noticing the effect of so much stress and pressure on my health. When you’re paddling in the system, you don’t tend to appreciate yourself as an individual or the skills you have.

I ended up taking a year out where I completed a psychotherapy intro course, and I was able to immerse myself in my interest in the mind and mental wellbeing. I then started teaching in medical schools and exploring coaching alongside this. I found that it combined my interests and previous experience perfectly - bringing together the interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence training from medical school, a teaching/guiding element and the empathy and sensitivity needed to tune into someone else and hold space for them. Leaning into a burnout prevention niche came naturally, with the understanding of what it’s like to work in the healthcare system, having connected with so many friends and colleagues over the years who have experienced this.

What brought you to Oru?

I was following you on Instagram and saw your bounceback post at a perfect time! It seemed like such a great opportunity to have designated space and time to explore my coaching and my niche, and have support at the start of my business journey.

How has the bounceback scheme helped you?

It’s helped ground me with a bit of routine (and regular meditation). I think the bigger thing is the possibility of hosting workshops.

What do you love about working from Oru?

I love the community meditation and yoga classes, and of course the free toasty tuesdays breakfast! I’ve found that I love working in the quiet room of the workspace. The whole place has such a lovely vibe about it.

What’s next? Any exciting plans you can share with us?

It’s an exciting time, I’ve just started a trial programme around preventing burnout, with 1-1 work, group coaching and self-directed materials. I’ve been coaching some NHS teams too which has been great, and looking forward to work with more people in the healthcare space.
