Ashtanga self-practice

What is Mysore style?

Mysore-style is a nickname for self-practice astanga yoga, which is a dynamic form of moving meditation. Set sequences or ‘series’ of postures are linked by breath - guided movements known as vinyasa. Mysore style is the best way to learn astanga yoga, because everyone progresses at their own pace and receives one on one assistance from the teacher.

People often feel nervous about coming to Mysore classes, but don't worry! You'll learn the Astanga yoga sequences, and over time get to know them so well that you will be able to practice anywhere and everywhere, whatever life throws at you! You may also find time to explore the other 7 limbs of Astanga yoga (astanga meaning 8 limbs or branches, of which the physical practice is just one). Mysore style refers to the city of Mysore in Southern India where research into this form of physical and spiritual therapy has been centred for over a century.

Traditionally Mysore is practiced in the morning, with the sequence of movements designed to warm and open up the body, and prepare you for meditation. Mysore classes always look like they start early and are really long…but please note that you don’t need to arrive at the beginning (or stay until the end!) You start at a time to fit with your schedule.

Mysore is perfect for beginners, allowing you the space and time to really understand every posture without the pressures of following a led class. The practice becomes both shared and individual. You share the space with fellow practitioners, each with their own, unique experience of yoga.
